On The Line

On the Line, Denise I. O'Neal's first work of fiction, is a gutsy account of black Chicago firefighter Cassius "Cash" Rivers and the effect racism has on the job has on his professional and personal life, both simultaneously unraveling at the seams as Cash takes on the task of making a run for an elected spot in the department's local--an endeavor that has never been attempted by a minority.

Though brothers in the trenches his white counterparts are reluctant to accept Cash as one of their union leaders. Confronted with a challenge he has faced  for the balance of his life Cash knows he has only one choice-- break the barrier that has existed far too long, or die trying.

On the homefront his wife Bobbi has one desire, for her husband to let go of this foolish notion, fearing he may have to pay to dear a price for his attempt.

Stalwart and unwavering Cash pursues his venture, a rocky marriage and dissension among the department's rank-and-file the result. Will Cash win the battle he has ensued? Or, will he discover the hard way, some stones are better left unturned?
